The Sun - Mobile App Improvements

Our brief was to evaluate the current app’s user interface and explore how the splash and news areas could be made bigger, more impactful for readers, and how to increase the prominence of the share option on app articles. These changes also needed to be compatible with the desktop version.

Our recommendations: Reduce the depth of the masthead to create more space for content. Move The Sun logo to the left for a more modern look, freeing up the right-hand space. Add a ‘Sign in’ option to promote user registration.

To boost visual impact, we introduced two new, larger, and bolder teaser types—the Splash and the Hero. We also updated the Large teaser, making it full-width to match the new Splash and Hero designs, resulting in a cohesive and striking interface.

Additionally, as part of News UK and The Sun’s AA accessibility drive, we revised and updated the colour palette to ensure site colours met accessibility standards.

With time constraints and budget limitations, user testing was reduced, and design best practices guided the project. Despite these challenges, we delivered a modern and impactful redesign on schedule. More research, testing, and refinement were flagged as necessary for a future roadmap, ensuring long-term improvements.
